With Kent Guild as senior captain, the basketball team from Fairland (Ind.) High School (64 total enrollment) was unbeaten in the regular season and defeated much larger schools on the way to a regional runner-up finish.  Guild came to DePauw on a Rector Scholarship and was a four-year basketball starter as 6-foot tall forward.  As a sophomore the Tigers won 12 straight games, beating Ball State, Indiana State and Butler twice.  That team, ranked 58th in the nation, lost only three times, including to Indiana and Iowa.  Guild was co-captain and high scorer his senior year with 270 points, a 14.2 per game average.   His career and senior year free throws attempted and his career free throws made still rank in the top ten.  Off the basketball court, he was president of his fraternity, president of the interfraternity council, a member of Gold Key and he graduated cum laude with a degree in pre-medical science.  He received his M.D. degree from Northwestern University, and has practiced family medicine in Plymouth, Ind., for 40 years.  Guild is a Diplomat of the American Board of Family Physicians, a member of the Indiana State and American Medical Associations, former president of the Plymouth Hospital Medical Staff and Board of Trustees, and a preceptor for Indiana University Medical School.  He was team physician for Plymouth H.S. for 35 years, co-founded the Marshall-Starke Development Center for the handicapped, in addition to other community and charitable leadership positions in Plymouth.  Guild is a former member of the DePauw Alumni Board and the Board of Trustees, as was his grandfather, Merrill D. Guild.  In 1978 Guild received the Rector Scholar Achievement Award, and he was a physician member of Winter Term in Mission teams to Guatemala in 1980 and Peru in 1985.  He married the former Judith Drompp ’53, and all four of their children graduated from DePauw:  John ’80, Anne ’82, Steven ’85 and Sarah ’88.  A total of 62 members of the Guild family have attended DePauw University.
