Tigers Slip to 0-2 with Loss at Fontbonne

St. Louis, Mo. - Host Fontbonne jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never trailed on the way to a 25-4 win over DePauw. The Tigers dropped to 0-2, while the Griffins improved to 3-1.

Austin Schile, Sam Johnson, Cameron Combs and Pierce Ellinwood each scored once for DePauw, with Greg Lambert and Jack Glerum each tallying an assist. Peter Travis led Fontbonne with 10 points on seven goals and three assists with Colin Benecke chipping in four goals and five assists.

DePauw’s John Zupancic dominated the center circle on restarts, winning 24 of 31 faceoffs. On the season, Zupancic has won an astonishing 72.3% of his faceoffs (34-47), to lead the North Coast Athletic Conference in that statistical category.

Fontbonne led DePauw in ground balls scooped, 39-32, and shots, 57-31.

DePauw’s goalie, JR Strubbe, was harnessed with the loss after a 14-save performance. The Tigers back-up goalie, Nick Lucca, saw his first action of his collegiate career between the pipes, seeing 1:42 of game time.

Chad Meurer, Fontbonne’s goalie, recorded the victory to move his season record to 2-1 after blocking 12 shots and only allowing four goals.

DePauw continues its inaugural season on Saturday when they welcome Carthage College to Greencastle, Ind., for the first home collegiate lacrosse match at DePauw. The game is slated to start at 2 p.m. on March 9.
